Hartenberg, The Stork 750ml 2015South Africa, Stellenbosch
'The Stork is usually more perfumed and refined than Gravel Hill, but there's a density and concentration to the wine in 2015 that's unusual. Smooth, plush and fynbos-scented, this is further proof that this was a very vintage for Rhône varieties, combining texture and tannins with acidity. Drink 2021-32.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 95/100
'On the nose, some smoky reduction to go with attractive oak-derived notes plus black and blue fruit as well as pepper. The palate, meanwhile, is sweet, rich and smooth textured (alcohol: 14.29%). The extraordinary fruit density will impress some while the lack of refreshment value will vex others.' – Christian Eedes, WineMag.co.za, 91/100
'Enticing ripe bramble fruit with a bold frame, layers of crushed oyster shell mineral elegance and a velvety, long finish.' – Decanter World Wine Awards 2019, 91/100
Alc: 14.29% | RS: 2.6 g/L | TA: 5.9 g/L | PH: 3.46
'This limited volume wine represents a vineyard selection of Shiraz from a specific site that is planted solely on clay–rich "terra rossa" type soils. The vineyard ripens a full month later than our Gravel Hill Shiraz site.' – Hartenberg Estate
About Hartenberg Wine Estate:
Hartenberg is situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. It was created 30 years ago and has come a long way since its original poor parcel of dry gravelly soil. It was Carl Schultz, Hartenberg’s Winemaker, who saw the potential in ‘The Gravel Hill’ and noted the superiority of the grapes that were grown there. Hartenberg was thus one of the first South African estates to separately vinify grapes from a particular terroir.
The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.
