Eagles' Nest, Shiraz 750ml 2015South Africa, Constantia
'While the Shiraz from Constantia property Eagles’ Nest could hardly be described as new-wave, it always impresses. In the case of the current-release 2015, grapes were de-stalked before crushing and maturation lasted 18 months in French oak, 40% new. The nose is very expressive with notes of red and black fruit, pepper and spice, smoked meat plus a little vanilla and incense. The palate has lovely fruit expression, lemon-like acidity and fine tannins which combine to give it a particular vinosity (alcohol: 14%). It’s not as stark or dramatic as the best examples from the Swartland but it is very, very convincing. – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100
'Trademark blue & black fruit on 2015, with spicy dried herb nuances from elevated cool site. Integrated, refined & elegant, if tad sweeter than stellar 2014 (5 stars, 95 pts). Firm oak (40% new for 18 months) cradles fruit to lengthy conclusion.' – Platter's Wine Guide 2019, 93/100
'The 2015 Eagles’ Nest Shiraz has a deep dark core with garnet rim. On the nose, aromas of whole black peppercorn, blackcurrant and subtle black cherry are delicately entwined with a faint smoky wisp, star anees and cloves. These aromas are complemented by a savoury, mouth filling pallet with distinct pepper spiciness and soft, integrated tannins. Well-judged acidity focuses these flavours as they resonate in the aftertaste. A truly great wine from maturing vineyards, this wine will age gracefully for 20 years from vintage.' – Winemaker
The vineyard aspects range from east to north, and are perfectly positioned for a cool climate Shiraz. All grapes were hand picked, de-stalked and crushed into medium sized open top fermenters. Punch-downs or pump-overs were performed three to four times per day. Fermentation took 12 days to complete, after which the free run wine was drawn off and the skins were pressed. The wine was then racked into French oak barrels. After 18 months in barrel (40% new), selected components of the wine were blended to create a complex and harmonious finished product.
